Welcome to The Movie Tree

Hello and welcome to The Movie Tree. Like most people, I am a big fan of movies. I, however, take movie watching to the extreme. In 2012 I watched 242 'new' movies (Yes, I track how many I watch). When I say new movies, I mean new to me. This number does not include the movies I watched for a second, or however many, time. You might be wondering how I was able to watch 242 'new' movies in 365 days. Well, I tend to watch movies in segments. I'll watch a little during lunch, a little more while working out, then finish it up during my early morning shift of feeding our baby boy. It's probably not the way the director intended me to watch it, but it allows me to watch more movies! I also have a wife that enjoys watching movies as well.

I am also big on rating movies. Usually I rate movies on sites such as IMBD and Film Affinity, but I will share those here as well. I rate movies based on a 1-10 scale ( you can see my translation of the scale on the Rating Tree). I'm not big on writing lengthy reviews, but I will from time to time. You will also see Top 10 lists, weekly recaps of the movies I watched, and my reactions to upcoming films and movie news. Feel free to agree or disagree with any post- I welcome the discussion. Enjoy!

Weekly Recap: April 21- April 27, 2013

A recap of the movies I watched for the first time this past week.

Featured:

This is 40 (2012)- 7/10

Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann) are both turning 40; they have family issues, communication issues, and two daughters that don't get a long. You can read my full review here. Apatow was at it again with this smart and 'real' comedy.

The Rest:

Deadfall (2012)- 5/10- Not a bad flick, but the characters are underdeveloped and it just never fully pulled me in.

Imagine That (2009)- 4/10- Family flicks aren't Eddie Murphy's forte, but I can see the appeal to young ones.

The Paperboy (2012)- 4/10- The actors did what they could with a pretty weak script; I'm not sure Kidman deserved a Golden Globe nom though.

The Spirit (2008)- 3/10- Despite the cool comic look of the film, this one is just bad all around.

Kaena: The Prophecy (2003)- 3/10- The animation looks like it is straight out of a video game, and the storyline isn't all that better.

This is 40 Reviewed

I'm a little late to the game one this one, but I just caught it on rental. Knocked Up (2007) is a solid flick, and I especially liked the mother-to-be's sister, Debbie (Leslie Mann), and her husband Pete (Paul Rudd). So I was happy to see there was going to be a spinoff that focused on these two characters and their children.

Both Pete and Debbie turn 40 in the same week, yet Debbie refuses to accept it; she insists she is turning 38. They are facing family issues, financial issues, communication issues, and two daughters that do not get along. To make matters worse, they are then hit with an unexpected surprise.

Rudd and Mann were very believable as newly turned 40 year olds with two daughters. They had great chemistry on screen. Their daughters, played by Apatow and Mann's real daughters Maude and Iris, were quite funny too. Especially the older daughter, Maude. She was great as a 'Lost' obsessed teenager. There is also an awesome part featuring Melissa McCarthy that had me rolling. Watch a few seconds into the credits to get even more McCarthy action.

Judd Apatow really redeemed himself with this one. I was not real fond of Funny People (2009), but I quite like his other work. So it was nice to see him back on his game. It was not his best work, but This is 40 is a fun and touching film. I actually liked it more than Knocked Up. If you are looking for a laugh out loud comedy, this is not it, but it is quite funny throughout. Apatow did a fantastic job of messing comedy with a serious subject- a somewhat struggling marriage.

My rating: 7/10

Weekly Recap: April 14- April 20, 2013

A recap of the movies I watched for the first time this past week.

Featured:

Django Unchained (2012)- 8/10

With the help of a bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz), Django (Jamie Foxx) sets out to free his wife from a ruthless slave owner (Leonardo DiCaprio). This is one of those will that will no doubt get better with each viewing. It is not as good as Tarantino's Basterds, in my opinion, but that one is tough to top. Waltz and DiCaprio are brilliant, and Foxx holds his own quite well.

The Rest:

Killing them Softly (2012)- 7/10- Brad Pitts is on his game yet again, this time as a hitman out to repay two small-time criminals.

Weekly Recap: April 7 - Aril 13, 2013

A recap of the movies I watched for the first time this past week.

Featured:

Argo (2012)- 7/10

A CIA operative (Ben Affleck) rescues six U.S. diplomats during the 1979 Iran hostage crisis using a fake movie script. Perhaps it was a case of over-hyping, but I wasn't in love with Argo. It is a good movie but it did not move in the way I was expecting it to. It still has a solid cast with a solid script.

The Rest:

A View to a Kill (1985)- 7/10- Roger Moore was looking old, and the Bond girls were pretty weak, but Christopher Walken played a solid villain.

The Spiderwick Chronicles (2008)- 5/10- A pretty decent kids flick, although Freddie Highmore's 'American' accent was unbearable at times.

Push (2009)- 5/10- Actually better than I was expecting; Chris Evans sure likes his superhero movies.

Godzilla vs. Megaguirus (2000)- 3/10-  Quite comical at first, but got old pretty fast.
